Chess Team updates
We were pleased to host the All-Wheaton Chess Championship Tournament on Saturday, March 18, an event which drew 12 schools and 175 players in competition.

Eight WCGS chess players competed in the Illinois State Chess Championships held in Bloomington, March 11-12. Jaydon Hayes (1st gr), Colin Wicks (1st gr), Alex Popham (3rd gr), Abigail Grandy (5th gr), Emily Peterson (6th gr), Zach Popham (6th gr), Sarah Grandy (8th gr), and Jacob Williams (8th gr) represented our school very well!
Our junior high team came in 8th place. Colin Wicks won 1st place for 500-699 in Lower Primary. Alex Popham won 10th place overall in Upper Primary. Zach Popham won 2nd place for Under 600 in Junior High.
First graders Jaydon Hayes and Colin Wicks came in 11th place for teams in Lower Primary, as we were 2 players short of a full team.
More than 200 chess players from around the Chicago area participated in the 5th annual WCGS Scholastic Chess tournament on Saturday, February 4. Thirty-three area schools were represented!
The competition was very strong, and we were pleased to have 33 of our chess players participating in the event. Some team highlights are as follows:
Lower Primary: 1st place team
3rd place: Colin Wicks (score 3.5/5)
6th place: Colton Kandrak (score 3.5/5)
7th place: Owen Flanyak (score 3.5/5)
Upper Primary: 2nd place team
4th place: Alex Popham (score 4/5)

Twenty-three WCGS chess players participated in the Benjamin Middle School Tournament on December 3. Our team did a great job!

Our Chess Team will next face competition at our own Tournament on February 4.
* In this tournament, trophies were awarded to top 10 in each section and then to the top 3 per grade. Consequently, overall trophies are higher than grade trophies.
Twenty-seven WCGS chess players participated in the St John tournament on November 19, yielding some outstanding results!

Eighteen WCGS chess players competed in the Illinois State All-Grade Tournament on Saturday, November 5. This is the second most competitive tournament that we participate in and it begins our tournament season. The team earned three team trophies.
Grade 3 earned a 5th place team trophy.
Grade 6 earned a 3rd place team trophy
Grade 8 earned a 3rd place team trophy, with one player short of a full team!
Additionally, 1st grader Colin Wicks, playing in his first tournament, earned 9th place for his grade, and 8th grader Sarah Grandy earned 6th place for her grade.
