Elementary, grades 1-5
Wheaton Christian Grammar School's elementary grades form a solid bridge between the Kindergarten and the Jr. High. What are some distinctives of our elementary grades?
Families choose Wheaton Christian Grammar School as a school where clear biblical integration is evident across the curriculum. It's not about a "religion class" added on to the school day! Teachers are strong Christian role models who take seriously their mission to educate, train, and nurture children for godliness and excellence. Scripture memorization increases in complexity and length during the elementary years. Our biblical worldview is firmly planted in novel studies which lead to rich discussions, as well as in math and science where God's intricate design is evidenced. Chapel participation increases during the elementary grades, and students reflect upon and journal what they have learned. (Read about our Christian formation goals >)
Teacher/student relationships are key as students move from lower to upper elementary years and discover more of their identity in Christ. In addition, older students partner with lower grade "buddies" as they help with projects and serve as leaders. Strong, positive behavioral expectations exist at Wheaton Christian Grammar School. Outreach/service opportunities are part of the class experience at each grade level.
Technology supports the curriculum at every level. Students have opportunities to use cross-curricular integration tools including Prezi, SMART Notebook, and Glogster. Cross-curricular field trips enhance learning for all students.
Math groupings are in place to meet students' needs and abilities. Our hands-on Science curriculum provides a solid foundation for students' future STEM studies. Outdoor Education (two nights at Camp Timber-lee for 5th graders) is a highlight and a culmination of a year's study in natural and applied sciences. Our use of Classical Roots curriculum provides a strong foundation in Greek and Latin word derivations. A phonics-based spelling program is in place as well. Cursive writing is not a lost art at WCGS; it is both taught and emphasized!
Parents often use the word "balanced" when they describe Wheaton Christian Grammar School, because the strong academic program comes along with numerous fine arts and co-curricular activities. And what about students who need extra help? Systems are in place to offer support and structure, encourage student responsibility, and connection/communication with parents. Our Kaleidoscope program offers a menu of support services as an option for students with learning needs.
