Grandparents' Day 2016 drew more than 530 participants to Wheaton Christian Grammar School for a lovely fall afternoon filled with warm welcomes, hugs, and many tender moments between our students and their special guests. It is fitting that this special day comes just before Thanksgiving because we are truly thankful for these important people. Visitors came from England, Italy, Netherlands, and Mexico, as well as from at least 26 states! Many who could not attend sent mail, e-mails, and even faxes to convey their love.
As the afternoon's activities began, our Honors String Ensemble set a fitting tone with the hymns "Come, Thou Font of Every Blessing, "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," and "Praise God, From Whom All Blessings Flow." Second graders recited Psalm 145, after which we pledged to the American and Christian flags, and delighted in hearing third graders sing "A Mighty Fortress is Our God."
Attenders enjoyed an interview with grandparents Paul and Shirley Mathews and Sam and Carol Shellhammer, couples who have a long history of involvement at WCGS and who between both families currently have 5 grandchildren at our school. Paul Mathews is a member of our Board of Directors, having previously served in that role when his children were enrolled.
The afternoon's main events, though, took place in the classrooms as grandparents attended classes with the children they had come to visit. Some classes gave presentations, others hosted games, and all rolled out the red carpet for these V.I.P. guests.
We appreciate each special guest, and look forward to seeing them again next year!
